Music Marketing Blog Post #1

 Music Marketing Project Planning Process

To prepare for the beginning of this process, my group first had to collect some information on the music industry to better understand how these marketing processes work. With our chosen genre of Pop, we began to research major music labels that specialize in Pop. So, my group chose to research Sony Music Entertainment and Capitol Records to observe modern trends in marketing and distribution.

In order to remain organized, my group went ahead and placed all of the research into two charts that are categorized by the company's history, artists and groups signed to the company, and two case studies that observe these distribution/ marketing practices. My group slit up in half for the research, so two people worked on Sony Music Entertainment while the other two worked on Capitol Records. Examples of these practices would include social media presence, partnerships or collaborations with other brands, etc.

Now that the research has helped our group further understand the processes for marketing and distribution taking place in the music world, we could begin the actual project. However, to stay consistent with our organization, we created a schedule to follow so we do not fall behind and know what we are expected to complete for each day. Besides the schedule, our group created a group chat through messages so we could keep in contact in case plans change for the schedule. This group chat was mainly utilized to schedule group meetings during the week or on the weekend to discuss our plans for the project and make decisions for the final idea.

This is the schedule that our group created to stay on top of our plan and make sure we get the project done before its due. It was challenging to come up with the schedule since we had to find a balance between our workload from our other classes with the work and time it takes to finish this project. We discussed the schedule for a while until we were able to come to term with what should be done for each day.
After finalizing the schedule, our group sat down to brainstorm and share ideas on how the campaign should be made, as well as the music video production through the storyboard. For the storyboard, each member shared their ideas for the scenes in the music video that would capture the essence of the lyrics within the song. After discussing our ideas, we chose the final ideas for the storyboard, and sat down together to talk about what angles and extra elements will be incorporated onto each scene.
As for the campaign, each of us created a list of ideas that would work for our campaign, like ideas related to social media presence, the website, distribution plans, etc. After a certain amount of time, we came back together as a group and one at a time shared our ideas and discussed which ones would be most effective for the campaign.
